MONTREAL – In honour of National Child Day, many activities throughout the month of November in EMSB B.A.S.E. Daycares centred on the theme of rights and responsibilities!

This year’s November 20th National Child Day celebrations marked the 30th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child! In honour of this milestone, several EMSB B.A.S.E. Daycares held after school and pedagogical day events where students engaged in Play it Fair! activities from Equitas, the International Centre for Human Rights Education. Students were also challenge to help create a Children’s Rights deck of cards and trees of rights.

As part of an EcoKid challenge, daycare students played a Play it Fair! game to learn about their rights and responsibilities and then created illustrations or challenges related to a specific right. For example, on the right to health and well-being, one student challenged others to educate themselves about their own health.

The B.A.S.E. Daycare’s Children’s Rights Leadership deck of cards is in development and will hopefully be available to each daycare by the end of the 2019-2020 school year.

Promoting cooperation, inclusion, respect and peaceful conflict resolution is part of the everyday work in EMSB B.A.S.E. Daycares. All B.A.S.E. Daycares have been exposed to Equitas’ Play It Fair! program in some form and have used it as a tool to foster positive values and a more peaceful, inclusive, and respectful environment.
