What was once a small science lecture auditorium is now a sparkling new STEAM Maker Space at James Lyng High School. And it was a hive of industry on February 20, when the school invited guests to a ribbon-cutting ceremony to show off the innovative space in full function.
There are many ways to achieve high school certification. Our goal is to help assess, identify, and utilize the optimal path for each of our students. Whether they require a more hands-on experience approach or the classic five-year academic program, we are equipped to serve each individual’s needs. With transition programs into high school for elementary students and additional programs for those transitioning into post-secondary life, our scope of success is vast, whether it be pursuing CEGEP, Vocational Training, Entrepreneurship or University.
JLHS offers the regular 5-year Quebec Secondary Education Program for the majority of its students, as well as two specialized programs (described below). All students have access to a dedicated team of teachers and support staff, as well as a variety of school facilities to engage them in their learning – visit our website for more information!
Special programs:
SAIL (Supporting All Individual Learners)
The SAIL team is proud to provide a unique learning environment that supports students with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Students are integrated into mainstream classes with their peers, while also benefitting from extra assistance from SAIL teachers and special education technicians. We prioritize the academic as well as the social success of our students. Students also have a separate SAIL resource room – a welcome retreat to go to when feeling over-stimulated, overwhelmed, or simply needing a quiet space to focus.
Aim High Program
Aim High is a modified Secondary Cycle 1 program designed for students aged 12-15 that are not fully academically, emotionally, or behaviourally ready for the reality of a regular high school experience. These students may need a smaller class, different pace of instruction, fewer transitions and more resource support, and this is what the Aim High program offers. The purpose is to help students build confidence in themselves no matter what their academic goals are – whether it be to re-integrate into the high school regular stream or opt for an alternative program.
Research shows that students who are involved in extracurricular activities (ECAs) have a positive sense of belonging at school and tend to persevere in their studies. Participation in ECAs also boosts morale, helping develop social skills, improve attendance, and enforce punctuality. Students and alumni of JLHS recognize the effect their attachment to an activity has had on their behaviour and performance at school, and speak highly of their experience!
