When it comes to children and their education, a great deal of emphasis is placed on reading, writing, arithmetic and science. But are kids learning financial literacy? As far as Roslyn Elementary School parent Mark Tilden is concerned, the answer is no. So he did something to change that.
Roslyn is an English language school, part of the English Montreal School Board, that offers a full French immersion program for students.
Give your child the advantage of knowing a second language
The goal of Roslyn’s French immersion program is to help children become fully bilingual and comfortable in working and living in both French and English. This offers them the ability to play a full role in the development of Quebec’s society and unique culture and to take on responsibilities and positions in any area of the private or public sectors if they choose.
In the early years in kindergarten through to the end of grade 2, children are taught entirely in French. Research has shown that full exposure to a second language at as early an age as possible makes it easier for children to become fluent in the second language.
Students in grade 3 through grade 6 spend half of each week working in each of English and French. Typically, science, ethics & religious cultures and social sciences along with French grammar and writing are taught in French. Mathematics, English literature, music and physical education are taught in English.
A study carried out by McGill over many years has shown that children, no matter their level of proficiency in school, benefit from learning a second language as early as possible. Specifically, the skills, acquired in learning the second language are useful in all other subject areas -- students with second language skills do better in all their subject areas than children with only single language skills.
Imagination is the seed of greatness
Roslyn’s approach to learning recognizes how important it is for students to be engaged and inspired by their environment, and their abilities. While fulfilling the ministry mandated curriculum within its French Immersion Program, students are also encouraged to partake in a wide range of enriched subjects.
Every year, Roslyn strives to provide students with various enrichment opportunities. The Resource team works closely with the homeroom teacher to help children who need an extra little push, or to engage children who need more challenges or any subject area using the two-table model. Furthermore, in partnership with Concordia University, workshops will be offered to students in the field of engineering.
For this academic year, we will hold student workshops to promote student empathy and kindness. In addition, Roslyn school will be partnering with different organizations that can help promote mindfulness that can help students cope with the stressors they encounter on a daily basis. There seems to be no limit to the interests and enthusiasm of our students.
Students attending Roslyn may participate in a wide variety of extra-curricular activities which help to support their mental and physical health and meets their interests. The Roslyn Physical Education Team offers intramural activities during lunch time such as basketball and open gymnasium sessions, as well as the junior and senior field day, Terry Fox run and Jump Rope for the Heart. They also do a great job of organizing activities with the Greater Montreal Athletic Association (GMAA) consisting of cross-country run, basketball jamboree, the Futsal tournament and the Halo Race. The Roslyn Home & School organization, HandS, offers a variety of afterschool and lunchtime activities organized by HandS with the focus of meeting students' individual interests and providing them with academic enrichment (see below) and movement exercise opportunities.
