EMSB to Hold Remembrance Day Ceremonies over a Two-Week Period

Montreal - Sunday, November 6, 2016

The English Montreal School Board will mark Remembrance Day across its youth sector.

The following EMSB schools held Remembrance Day observances on November 4:

  • Gerald McShane Elementary School in Montreal North marked Remembrance Day by honoring veterans and current Canadian Forces Members. The school marked the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Beaumont-Hamel, the 60th anniversary of United Nations peacekeeping missions as well as recognize the 100th anniversary of the formation of the second construction battalion, which was Canada’s first all-Black battalion.
  • Dalkeith Elementary School in Anjou commemorated the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge. In attendance was Master Corporal Eric Washburn and Corporal Laurier Chabot. 

The following EMSB schools will hold Remembrance Day observances on Monday, November 7:

  • Vincent Massey Collegiate (5925 27e Avenue) in Rosemount will mark Remembrance Day by welcoming the Member of Parliament for Calgary Centre and Minister of Veterans Affairs Canada, The Honourable Kent Hehr (8:30 am).

The school will also mark the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Beaumont-Hamel, the 60th anniversary of United Nations peacekeeping missions as well as recognize the 100th anniversary of the formation of the second construction battalion, which was Canada’s first all-Black battalion. The school’s Remembrance Committee, composed of dedicated students, and art teacher Rachel Thompson, have created 17,000 18 inch poppies that will be laid at the grave stones of Canadian eterans and Canadian Forces members on November 11, 2016. For more information, please contact Rocco Speranza at: rsperanza@emsb.qc.ca.

  • Perspectives I & II (7770 20e Av) in St. Michel will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge and Canadian military service. In attendance will be Sergeant Petrou and Corporal Laurier Chabot. For more information, please contact Vince Lacroce: vlacroce@emsb.qc.ca
  • James Lyng High School in St. Henri (5440 Notre Dame) will welcome Captain Waterhouse. There will be a candle lighting ceremony, as well as students reading reflections and poems. For more information, please contact Veronica D’Agata: vdagata@emsb.qc.ca 

The following EMSB schools will be holding Remembrance Day observances on Tuesday, November 8:

  • East Hill Elementary School (10350 Perras) in R.D.P. will mark Remembrance Day by honoring veterans and current Canadian Forces Members. The school will mark the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Beaumont-Hamel, the 60th anniversary of United Nations peacekeeping missions as well as recognize the 100th anniversary of the formation of the second construction battalion, which was Canada’s first all-Black battalion. The following EMSB schools will be holding Remembrance Day observances on Wednesday, November 9:

  • Edward Murphy School (6800 Pierre de Coubertin) in Hochelaga-Maisonneuve will mark Remembrance Day by honoring veterans and current Canadian Forces Members. The school will mark the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Beaumont-Hamel, the 60th anniversary of United Nations peacekeeping missions as well as recognize the 100th anniversary of the formation of the second construction battalion, which was Canada’s first all-Black battalion.   • Nesbitt School (6108 8th Avenue) in Rosemount will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge and Canadian military service. In attendance will be Sergeant Petrou and Captain Adam Baker. For more information, please contact Vince Lacroce: vlacroce@emsb.qc.ca
  • St. Monica Elementary School (6440 Terrebonne) in N.D.G will welcome Master Corporal McCarthy and Corporal Srihanu. There will be a candle lighting ceremony, as well as students reading reflections and poems. For more information, please contact Veronica D’Agata: vdagata@emsb.qc.ca

The following EMSB schools will be holding Remembrance Day observances on Thursday, November 10:

  • St. Gabriel Elementary School (600 Dublin) in Pointe St. Charles will welcome Member of Parliament for Ville Marie-Le Sud Ouest-Ile des Soeurs Marc Miller, as well as Master Corporal Lacroix as our guest speakers. The following EMSB schools will be holding Remembrance Day observances on Friday, November 11:

  • Merton School (5554 Robinson) in Cote Saint Luc will welcome Member of Parliament for Mount Royal, Anthony Housefather (10 a.m).
  • Westmount High School will hold its ceremony at 10:15 am.  Close to 200 Westmount High alumni gave their lives in the Great War and World War II, including Fred Fisher, the first Canadian to be honoured with the Victoria Cross. They are always remembered and honoured on that day with dignity and gratitude they so deserve. Marc Miller is expected to attend.
  • Willingdon School (5870 Terrebonne) in N.D.G. will welcome Member of Parliament for N.D.G.-Westmount and Minister of Transport, the Honorable Marc Garneau (2 p.m).
  • John F. Kennedy High School in St. Michel, James Lyng High School in St. Henri, Vincent Massey Collegiate in Rosemount will all participate in the official Remembrance Day ceremony (10:30 am) in downtown Montreal. For more information, please contact Frank Lofeodo at: flofeodo@emsb.qc.ca
