Dancing in the street: Soulpepper brings the spirit of Detroit to the Segal Centre

Detroit: Music of the Motor City, from April 12 to May 3, 2026
The Segal Centre for Performing Arts is set to host an electrifying musical showcase with its upcoming production, Detroit: Music of the Motor City, from April 12 to May 3, 2026. Following the sold-out success of The Secret Chord: A Leonard Cohen Experience, the acclaimed Soulpepper group returns to Montreal with a high-energy concert that explores the sonic evolution of Detroit.
Co-created by Andrew Penner, Travis Knights, and Frank Cox-O'Connell, the show brings Detroit’s resilient spirit to life through a diverse soundtrack. Audiences can expect a powerful lineup of iconic hits, including songs from Martha and the Vandellas, The Temptations, Marvin Gaye, and Eminem.
“When great music meets extraordinary talent, something truly special happens,” shares Artistic & Executive director, Lisa Rubin. “...hot on the heels of The Secret Chord, we couldn’t pass up the chance to reunite with these phenomenal artists and creators to light up the stage once more.”
Beyond the music, the production, directed by Cox-O'Connell, explores the city’s history, civil rights struggles, and systemic inequalities. Whether you are a fan of jazz, rock, or R&B, the show provides a profound and gritty insight into the music that has shaped the world.
It's likely that after attending the production at the Segal Centre, you’ll be found dancing in the street, just like in the hit song by Martha and the Vandellas. As Rubin shares, “... a celebratory concert filled with nostalgia, energy, and timeless hits, you won’t be able to stay in your seat!”
The theatre is committed to accessibility and is offering patrons two audio-described performances that are scheduled to take place on Sunday, April 26, 2026, at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
